Does Your Family Sing In Unison?

Updated: Apr 9, 2021

I grew up in a family where everyone knows the “family jams”... where you’re three years old singing “Sitting in the Park” by GQ with so much emotion! You don’t know what the song is really about, but you know every single word. Then you’re 27, still singing that song — except now you’ve lived enough to understand not only why it’s a family jam, but also why it’s a great song.

In my family, music has always been as important a factor as the food and the drinks. The music plays and it sets the tone for the party. People are eating, socializing and laughing. It doesn’t matter how many people are there, or the occasion, because when they hear one of their songs... everything stops. They don’t even realize it. Not while they’re pointing at each other when a lyric is meaningful, not when they drape their arms lovingly around each other shoulder, and not even when they’re huddled closer because being with each other, in that moment, during that song, unites them.

It’s a tradition passed down through the generations. Being together. Celebrating something. Grieving someone. Music always playing. Bringing us closer. I love that about my family — the bond we share and the music which has fueled so many of our memories. When we’re together, my family sings in unison. And it’s a beautiful thing.
